What do N95 | FFP2 Masks and N99 | FFP3 Masks stand for?
FFP3 is the highest and only mask grade that can filter airborne respiratory diseases like virus. The mask filters over 99% particles, the highest protection among all types of masks.
Where to use FFP3 masks:
- when travelling in airplanes, where social distancing is impossible
- any environment that is highly exposed to virus and bacteria
Who to use FFP3 masks: high risk groups e.g. people with allergies, elderly, sensitive lungs.
Note: FFP3 (certified in EU) is equivalent to N99 (certified in US).
FFP2 is mainly used for filtering bacteria, pollen and pollution particles. The mask grade, unlike FFP3, cannot filter virus particle, however, it is good enough to prevent droplets that carry virus and bacteria when someone sneezes or coughes. The mask filters over 95% particles.
Where to use FFP2 masks:
- When travelling in public transport, where social distancing is possible.
- Medium exposure to virus and bacteria.
- Exposure to pollen and exhaust gases
Who to use FFP2 masks: young and healthy individual who wants to protect against virus and bacteria, people with pollen allergies, living in polluted cities
KN95 mask is certified in China, while FFP2 and N95 are certified in EU and US respectively. While there are slight differences in testing methods, the masks that mark with the grades are generally safe to use. However, not all KN95 masks are EU compliant due to the shortage of masks in pandemic.
For FFPX grade and the sake of public health protection, we currently only source EU compliant product i.e. with FFP and CE printed on the mask and packaging.
MaskZ of Sweden is committed to fight off fake masks in the market.
Half masks/ Respirators like FFP2 and FFP3 are normally limited to use for one-working day (about 8 hours). This means that if you are only popping into the shop and out, you are wearing for only 1 hour or so, don't throw your masks away! You can reuse it for up to 8 hours.
Air-dry the mask to reuse the mask.
Most medical grade FFP2 & FFP3 respirators cannot be washed unless written otherwise. They are to be disposed after one working day.

Respirators: Valves or no valves
Buy respirators with Valves if you experience difficulty in breathing when wearing a mask. Valve gives better ventilation for the user. General group of shoppers are high risk groups such as elderly or people who have sensitive lungs.
If you are a carrier of virus or bacteria, shop respirators without valves as the air breathes out will infect others.
Stay home after all if you are ill.
Note: Respirators with a one-way valve help keep the mask cool and less stuffy because the warm air you breathe out escapes more easily. However, these respirators can allow unfiltered air to escape and spread into the air around you, potentially spreading the viruses from an infected person.
