Why synthetic nitrile glove is the new alternative

By Jose Caloca

Gloves are really important when preventing contagion from any infectious agent. Now, among so much variety according to type, composition, cost, etc, it is difficult to know which is the best when it comes to infectious agents.

What do nitrile gloves protect against?

This type of gloves prevents touch with highly toxic materials, fluids, liquids and is resistant to punctures.

Although there are different compositions, all nitrile gloves are more resistant than others, have greater sensitivity to the touch and are difficult to pierce.

Use of gloves in infection control

Gloves must be always worn by people that by the nature of their jobs must be exposed to substances, fluids, liquids, or toxic materials. The aim of the gloves is to isolate the user from the source of infection or hazard.

If you use gloves as a protection measure against COVID-19, remember to wash your hands before and after using the gloves, also avoid touching your face. It is important to discard them once you finish using the gloves.

Main differences between synthetic nitrile gloves (nitrile / vinyl mix) and 100% nitrile gloves

The main one is in its composition, while one has 100% nitrile, the synthetic has a mixture. This makes the former a thicker and stronger product than the latter. Likewise, both serve the same purpose: to be more resistant and avoid perforations. Synthetic nitrile is more affordable than 100% nitrile gloves and more durable than 100% vinyl.

When to wear synthetic nitrile gloves or 100% nitrile gloves? Why?

It depends on what you are working on. Both are normally medical grade, stated on the box. The difference is if you are likely to feel the object with your hand like examining skin and body, it is advisable to use 100% nitrile, for better feeling. Typical work nature who requires thin layer of gloves are surgeons.

If you are one of those who use gloves as a protection measure from COVID-19 such as in restaurants, hotels, customer service, cleaning, then the best choice is synthetic nitrile.
